Wig Care Guide — Everything You Need to Know

Whether this is your first wig or your tenth, this guide covers everything you need to wear, style, store, and care for your D'AuraHaven wig with confidence. Bookmark this page — you will come back to it.

✦ Understanding Your Wig

What type of wig do I have?

D'AuraHaven wigs come in two main types. Synthetic wigs are made from heat-resistant fibres that hold their style even after washing. They are lower maintenance, more affordable, and ideal for everyday wear. Human hair wigs can be styled with heat tools just like your natural hair, offer the most natural look and movement, and last significantly longer with proper care.

Check your product page or the tag inside your wig cap to confirm which type you have. This determines exactly how you should care for it.

What is a lace front wig?

A lace front wig has a sheer lace panel along the front hairline. This creates a natural-looking hairline and allows you to style the hair away from your face. The lace is designed to blend with your skin tone and becomes virtually invisible when applied correctly with wig glue or tape.

How do I know the wig will fit me?

Most D'AuraHaven wigs come with an adjustable strap and hook system inside the cap that accommodates head circumferences from approximately 53cm to 58cm — which covers the majority of head sizes. If you have a particularly large or small head, measure your head circumference before ordering and check the product specifications. To measure, use a soft tape measure around your head just above your ears and across your forehead.

✦ Putting On Your Wig

How do I prepare my natural hair before putting on a wig?

Start with clean, dry hair. Braid your natural hair flat against your head in cornrows or flat twists, or smooth it down and secure with bobby pins. If your hair is thick or long, a wig cap worn over your flattened hair will create a smoother base and help the wig sit more naturally. Wig caps are available in beige, brown, and black — choose one closest to your skin tone for the best result along the hairline.

How do I put on the wig correctly?

Hold the wig by the ear tabs on either side. Tilt your head slightly forward and place the front edge of the wig at your natural hairline. Pull the wig back over your head until the back wig band sits at the nape of your neck. Adjust the wig so it sits centred on your head. Use the adjustable straps inside the cap to tighten the fit until the wig feels secure but comfortable. For lace front wigs, cut the lace carefully along the hairline using small scissors before applying.

How do I apply a lace front wig without it looking obvious?

After positioning the wig, apply a thin line of wig adhesive or double-sided wig tape along your natural hairline. Press the lace gently onto the adhesive and hold for 30 seconds. Use a fine-tooth comb or your fingertips to blend the lace edges. For an even more natural look, apply a small amount of foundation or concealer along the lace edge in your skin tone. Baby hairs along the front can be laid flat using a soft brush and edge control gel.

✦ Washing Your Wig

How often should I wash my wig?

For daily wearers, wash your wig every 10 to 14 days. For occasional wearers, wash it after every 6 to 8 wears. Washing too frequently strips the fibres of moisture and shortens the lifespan of the wig. Washing too infrequently allows product buildup to dull the hair and reduce its natural movement.

How do I wash a synthetic wig?

Fill a basin or sink with cool water. Add a small amount of wig shampoo or mild sulphate-free shampoo. Submerge the wig and gently swish it through the water using your fingers. Do not rub or scrub — this causes tangling and fibre damage. Rinse thoroughly under cool running water until the water runs clear. Gently squeeze out excess water without wringing. Apply a small amount of wig conditioner from mid-length to ends, leave for 2 minutes, then rinse. Place the wig on a wig stand and allow to air dry completely. Never use a hair dryer on a synthetic wig unless it is specifically rated as heat resistant.

How do I wash a human hair wig?

The process is similar to washing synthetic wigs but you can use your regular sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner. Use lukewarm water rather than cold. After washing and conditioning, apply a leave-in conditioner or hair oil to the mid-lengths and ends while the hair is still damp. You can use a hair dryer on a low heat setting or allow to air dry on a wig stand. Style once completely dry.

Can I wash my wig in the washing machine?

No. Machine washing damages the cap construction and the fibres. Always hand wash your wig using the method above.

✦ Styling Your Wig

Can I use heat tools on my wig?

For heat resistant synthetic wigs: Yes, but use low heat only — maximum 130°C / 266°F. Always use a heat protectant spray before applying any heat tool. Test on a small hidden section first. For standard synthetic wigs: No heat tools. Even a light pass with a straightener will permanently melt and fuse the fibres. For human hair wigs: Yes, treat them exactly as you would your natural hair. Use heat protectant and avoid excessive heat to preserve the hair's longevity.

How do I detangle my wig?

Always detangle from the ends upward toward the roots — never from root to tip, which causes breakage and frizz. Use a wide-tooth comb or a wig brush with flexible bristles. Hold the hair at the mid-length with one hand to reduce tension on the cap while brushing. Detangle when the wig is dry unless it is a human hair wig, which can be carefully detangled damp with conditioner applied.

Can I cut or colour my wig?

Human hair wigs can be cut and coloured by a professional stylist experienced with wigs. Synthetic wigs cannot be coloured with standard hair dye as the fibres do not absorb colour the same way natural hair does. Cutting is possible but we recommend having it done professionally to preserve the shape and style of the wig.

My synthetic wig looks frizzy — how do I restore it?

Fill a spray bottle with a mixture of equal parts fabric softener and water. Lightly mist the wig and use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to gently smooth the fibres. Allow to air dry on a wig stand. For more stubborn frizz on a heat resistant wig, use a light pass with a straightener on the lowest setting after applying heat protectant. This method restores the smoothness and shine to the fibre without damaging it.

✦ Storing Your Wig

How should I store my wig when I am not wearing it?

Always store your wig on a wig stand or mannequin head. This preserves the shape of the cap and prevents the fibres from becoming tangled or flattened. If you do not have a wig stand, store the wig in its original packaging or in a clean satin or silk bag to protect the fibres from friction and dust. Never store a wig in a plastic bag as this traps moisture and causes odour.

Should I store my wig styled or unstyled?

Store synthetic wigs in their natural styled state — they are designed to hold their style and do not need restyling after storage. Human hair wigs should be loosely braided or twisted before storage to prevent tangling, then restyled when you are ready to wear them.

How do I store my wig long term if I am not wearing it for a while?

Clean the wig thoroughly before storing. Allow it to dry completely — storing a damp wig causes mildew and odour. Place it on a wig stand or in a satin bag. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Sunlight causes colour fading in both synthetic and human hair wigs over time.

✦ Lifespan and Maintenance

How long will my wig last?

With proper care, a synthetic wig lasts 4 to 6 months with daily wear, or up to 12 months with occasional wear. A human hair wig lasts 1 to 3 years with daily wear and even longer with occasional use and excellent care. The biggest factors in wig lifespan are how frequently it is worn, how carefully it is washed and stored, and whether heat tools are used correctly.

My wig is shedding — is this normal?

A small amount of shedding when you first wear a new wig is completely normal. Excessive shedding, particularly around the wefts (the tracks where hair is sewn into the cap), is a sign of poor construction or damage. If your wig sheds excessively from the first wear, contact us immediately with a photo and we will resolve it under our product guarantee.

How do I reduce shedding?

Always handle the wig gently, particularly when detangling. Avoid tugging at the wefts. When washing, never rub or scrub vigorously. Apply a small amount of wig sealer or clear-drying glue to the weft edges to reinforce them — this is a standard practice that extends the life of the wig significantly.

✦ Orders, Delivery and Returns

How long will my wig take to arrive?

Delivery to the US, UK, Canada, and Australia takes 10 to 18 days with free standard shipping. Every order includes a tracking number sent to your email as soon as your wig is dispatched. Europe takes 12 to 22 days. Middle East takes 15 to 25 days.

Can I return my wig if it does not suit me?

For hygiene reasons, wigs that have been worn cannot be returned. If your wig arrives damaged, significantly different from the product description, or with a manufacturing fault, we will replace it immediately at no cost to you. Email us with a photo of the issue within 7 days of receiving your order and we will resolve it the same day.

What if my wig arrives looking different from the product photos?

Wigs are photographed on mannequins under professional lighting which can affect how the colour and texture appear. Minor variations in shade and wave pattern are normal and not considered a fault. Significant differences in style, length, or colour from what was advertised are considered product discrepancies and are covered under our replacement guarantee. Contact us with photos and we will make it right immediately.

I ordered the wrong size — can I exchange it?

If your wig has not been worn we can discuss an exchange. Contact us within 48 hours of receiving your order. The wig must be in its original condition and packaging. Email us at the address on your order confirmation and we will guide you through the process.
